Riding High

Posted 9 hours, 3 minutes ago by Carl Williams

Long Hot days are on the Menu for this Olympic Games. 5-6 Hours in the heat can really takes it toll over a week of racing. So part of our physical preparation includes some long hot endurance rides. All the Cycling l have been doing in preparation for the Olympics has been carefully planed and prescribed through Damian Marsh (TrainWell) who is also heavily involved with the NZ Track Pursuit Team. It has been a combination of strength/ power work and endurance all along being implemented with David Slyfields (NZ) conditioning program. The pics above are of Tom Ashley (NZ RS:X Olympic Rep) and Myself at the top of "Eslida" the second of four climbs through our 150km ride. Eslida took us to 800m Altitude the previous climb Oronet was 500m and there was still two more climbs to come at 950m and 777m respectively. Hence the fact we are still smiling in the photo..... and No l have nothing to show you what we looked liked upon our return 6 hours later! haha!
Tom has been here in Valencia using the similar light conditions to train and prepare for Qingdao. Tom being a fellow Cycling nut we have been able to get out for some great training rides together. David (Abo) Abercrombie BOR Physio/ Head of Training department has known Tom for quite a while and therefor Tom has been in at the BOR gym completing David Slyfields (Star team trainer also) training programs as well.
Valencia has proved to be a great place for all types of the build up, with China like Sailing conditions, great facilities thanks to the Americas Cup and local Yacht Clubs and being in Europe, central to a lot of the competition.
The physical element has been a real strong point leading up to these Olympics and something l hope to report on more in the future, because with out a shadow of a doubt l am in the best physical condition l have ever been in. Leaving time and effort to concentrate on Sailing to full potential. more »

China Training Wrap-Up

Posted 1 day, 2 hours ago by Sail Karma

We’ve just finished our final day of training at Yin Hai Yacht Club in Qingdao, China. This is the end of our last big training session before the Olympic Games! Our boat is loaded into a container, which will be shipped into the Olympic venue on July 22nd. The past two and a half weeks of training have been jam-packed but very successful. Most of the training days delivered the exact conditions we wanted for speed testing, equipment evaluation as well as mock races and starts. We’ve been working hard to get our speed and trim closer to perfect in light wind, lots of chop and current. Our speed downwind continues to be the strongest part of our race. As of today, we have finished selecting our Olympic Games mast, boom, spinnaker, rudder and centerboard. The boat work is finally complete and tweaked just the way we want for light wind.

One thing we have noticed during the past three days is more and more of the green algae popping up. Most of the Chinese military in charge of the clean up cleared out of the area a week ago, when the green goo was almost non-existant. Since they’ve gone, it’s seemed to have a bit of a resurgence. We’ve almost perfected the “less-than-three-second-goo-check” to clear our blades of the nuisance as quickly as possible during a race. If the algae sticks around, it will be crucial during racing to make sure it hasn’t clung to any part of the hull and blades.

We fly back to the USA tomorrow, one day earlier than we planned, for a thrilling event. We’ve been invited to the White House Rose Garden Lunch with President and Mrs. Bush. We are honored to be one of only a handful of Olympic athletes to receive this opportunity and we are ecstatic. After a day in Washington, D.C. we will fly to San Francisco for the US Olympic Team Processing.

This is where all team gear and opening ceremony uniforms are distributed. Following team processing the US Olympic Sailing Team will head to St. Francis Yacht Club for a send off party. Thanks in advance to St. Francis-This will be a fun evening for the whole team! We will then return to the East Coast for a few days off before returning to China on July 31. The final countdown to the Opening Ceremonies is on!

More to come,
Sarah & Amanda

What is ABYC Worth?

Posted 1 day, 12 hours ago by ABYC, Port Elizabeth, South Africa

According to Web Site Outlook, on the 19th of July the www.abyc.org.za web site was worth $4 277.80. Just for fun I plugged in the following local club sailing web sites to see what their worth is estimated to be as at 19 July 2008 -(clicking on the club will give you the latest estimated value): Redhouse - $1 569.50 Royal Cape Yacht Club - $3 204.70 Knysna Yacht Club - $1 489.20 Point Yacht Club - $1 511.10 False Bay Yacht Club - $1 803.10 Zululand Yacht Club - $1 533.00 Sailing.org.za - $3 051.40 The most clicked on link in the Sail Search ($6 161.20) Directory and Search Engine is the Sailing Scuttlebutt web site and Websiteoutlook estimates the value of Scuttlebutt at $15 205.90. Curiosity got the better of me and I plugged a couple of local, Port Elizabeth sites in to see what their estimated values are: MyPE - $20 242.90 E.P. Herald - $10 986.50 Algoa FM - $6 394.80 Mandela Bay Metro - $5 277.90 Of course all the above numbers pale into insignificance when you check out the estimated worth of Google.com at $1.2 Billion. On the other hand, Google.co.za looks like a bargain at $15.96 million! More Info about Websiteoutlook: How it works? Websiteoutlook contains a collection of the actual number of pageviews from other websites. The visitor data is combined with information about number of links that point towards the site, country, Alexa ranking and other data that is available on-line. All this information has been used to make a formula that uses the information that is available on-line to estimate the number of pageviews, its worth and possible daily income that the site has. How accurate is WebsiteOutlook? It is not an exact science, but it does give you a very good picture of how many pageview, daily ads revenue a website has. It can be used for numerous purposes especially when doing research. An Advertisers can get an estimate of how many pageview a site has before buying adverts. If you want to buy a website or domain Websiteoutlook can give you a pretty good idea about the number of pageviews and website worth the site has before contacting the owner. Websiteoutlook is good for any initial research or just because you're curious. more »

The South Pacific Cruise of Diomedea: The vortex of Musket Cove

Posted 1 day, 14 hours ago by Sail Blogs

We had a pleasant sail and motor from Vatia Bay to Lautoka, giving the code zero another outing in the nice flat water conditions. It was as if Diomedea had been transported to another planet where there are no big seas nor big winds. Wonderful. Lautoka is Fiji's second largest town and is home to a big sugar refinery (formally CSR now FSC)and to a woodchip mill. Large docks take big ships that carry away Fiji's bounty to overseas destinations. We were required to do an internal customs clearance so had a one hour stopover to achieve this purpose. Then it was a further six miles down the coast to Vuda point and the marina. This is approached through a channel dynamited through the reef with 2.2m at LWS. Phew, we just made it. Boats of all nationalities are ensconced within and substantial haulout facilities are available. The cyclone pits are also seen here. Holes in the ground lined by old tires serve as "hardstand" for boats staying unattended during the summer months. We had thus completed an east to west traverse of the entire Fiji group in three and a half days. Felt a bit weary, did the crew of Diomedea. We briefly tidied the boat and then it was off to Nani airport to meet our daughter Hannah. It was great to see her after so many months. We had a nice meal at the yacht club at the marina and chatted till 10 before crashing. Today, being Saturday, was market day. So Abdul the taxi driver drove us back in to Lautoka for shopping. Excellent markets with a good selection of fresh produce. The supermarket nearby is of course Morris Hedstrom and also had a reasonably good range of items. Finally it was Liquorland for a top up on the ballasting supplies. Back to the boat by 830 am and a late breakfast. Hannah had just awoken so timing was perfect. We left the marina about 11 and motored the 12 miles to Malolo in very light breeze. A moderately tricky three mile passage through reefs awaits the mariner. However we are now secured to a good mooring in a beautiful bay. We have caught up with several rally boats including Windflower, Runaway Bay, Claude William, Loafer and Destiny. Many other yachts are here, obviously entrapped in the temptations of this area. Some clearly do not leave... Many years ago we had come to nearby Castaway Island (aka Qalito island) for holidays with the then young children. It is only 4 miles up the road so we will try to get there as the snorkelling/scuba is excellent. Otherwise we will just chill in this island paradise. more »

Denali Great Lakes 2008 Tour: Chicago Mackinac Race Preparations

Posted 1 day, 21 hours ago by Sail Blogs

Denali is all set to go with final provisions and minor maintenance concerns all addressed for the race up Lake Michigan to Mackinac Island. The classic sitings we anticipate include Wisconsin shoreline, Point Sable, Sleeping Bear sand dunes, Greys Reef, Mackinac Bridge, and finally the Island of Mackinac. 430 boats is the most I have ever heard of in a long distance race. Logistics for that many boats must be a major factor in pre and post race management. Crew dinner tonight, a few minutes to see old friends at the Chicago Yacht Club, and then early to bed. Tomorrow morning will be busy with last minute preparations based on expected weather. Speaking of weather, all the forecasts have very low probability, which means light wind and variable direction. Very difficult to plan a strategy, other than sail the shortest distance while going as fast as possible. Should be more thunderstorms to spice things up Saturday afternoon and evening. Please add comments to this BLOG if you have any, and we will try our best to keep you posted on progress. You can track us at http://charthorizon.com/races/2008_chicago_mackinac/htdocs/mapper.phtml select Turbo for the class, or just Denali to see us only. The reports are delayed on this tracker by 3 hours. # more »

Chicago: America’s hidden sailing meca??

Posted 2 days, 2 hours ago by Sailogs

I've been playing around on Lake Michigan in preparation for the 100th running of the Chicago-Mackinac Race and feel that I've found a hidden mecca of sailing. Clearly it's always been here, incredibly established but this East Coast gal born just South of Chicago in Peoria feels like she's been missing out! My head has been clearly "stuck in the Sound"...so to speak!

I arrived in Chicago on the 11th to help deliver 55 foot beauty "Northern Light" to Saint Ingus, MI for Ray Teborek, owner of "Challenge": a 1970 S&S 50 I'll be crewing on for this year's Mac. Himself, wife and close friends will continue on to cruise after we complete the event while the "kids" will deliver "Challenge" back to Chicago.

"Northern Light"

"Challenge"

I am honestly not sure where to begin, since being here I've been completely in awe and positively overwhelmed with the sailing community. I simply love it! Looking to take in as much as I can with what little time available.

Last evening I embarked on what turned to be a 5.7 mile walk from the Belmont area to the Monroe area to meet up with folks at the Chicago YC's Monroe station (there is another at Belmont.) It was not my intention to go on such a hike in flip-flops but the activity on the shore line kept me walking, wanting to drink it all in (volley ball galore, extreme Frisbee matches, Dodge Ball in the live, hundreds and hundreds of people enjoying the lake!)

It was getting dark and the city lights egged me on to keep walking, a friendly txt message from Becky DeMore and Ed Furry of Saill22.com encouraged me to make way past Navy Pier and keep moving...they also offered me a ride back to Belmont, which sealed the deal!

Though, before making the trip home an invite to tour the Columbia Yacht Club was too good to pass up! Who would not want to muck around an old ferry turned into a floating Yacht Club?!?! A very special thank you to Peter Nielsen of Crowley's Yacht Yard Lakeside for the exclusive tour...he even let us play with the old fog horn!

The evening ended with some incredible candid conversation about community sailing programs and what Chicago has done to make the Lake accessible to as many people as possible. It was nice and quite enjoyable to spend the evening talking about how to get people access to the water and creative ways to share the sport of sailing with more people...so expect to hear more on this topic...

Till then...time to get my head in the game! I've never done the Mac before and very excited to participate in the event, even more excited about the prospects of a little island taken over by over 4,000 sailors and ecstatic about the material and pictures I hope to post and share!
