Qingdao's golf course
Posted 7 days, 21 hours ago by Valencia Sailing
You have to see it to believe it or as the Chinese say, a picture is worth a thousand words.
Natalia Vía-Dufresne and Laia Tutzó, the Spanish Olympic Women 470 duo, is currently in Qingdao in order to start their intensive training preparation for the upcoming Olympic Games, to be held in the Chinese coastal city in less than 2 months from now.
The two Spanish sailors wanted to start the training today (Friday) but had to face an unexpected and very tough situation. A thick carpet of algae covered tens of square kilometers of the bay, making it virtually impossible for their small yachts to navigate. According to the UK newspaper Telegraph, this is "the worst algae blight in living memory".
Natalia, jokingly, stated that "it wasn't a sailing race course, it was a golf course. It's not funny at all constantly trying to keep the algae off your rudder".
The photo tells the story, as the two Spanish women try to break through the algae on a windless day. At least they are laughing.

Archipelago Raid
Posted 1 month, 21 days ago by Sail Search Blog
www.Sail-Search.com: Stockholm, May 15 2008 In one month’s time the most extreme sailing race in the world will be hosting some of the biggest names in sailing, who will be competing against less unknown but talented and persistent teams in the 8th edition of the Archipelago Raid. In Formula 18 catamarans the Raid pushes the teams of two to the edge, both mentally and physically, as they navigate round the 100,000 islands that make up the Swedish, Aland and Finnish Archipelagos. For six days the teams will battle through some of the most challenging and beautiful landscapes in the world, with uncharted rocks and changing weather conditions, stopping only for a brief ‘overnight’ rest. This year’s edition takes place just before midsummer, when the almost non existent Scandinavian summer nights will demand even more of the competitors as one can more or less sail throughout the night. Almost 20 teams from nine nationalities have already signed up. Impressive personalities like Dame Ellen McArthur belong to the line up. Ellen McArthur competed in the Archipelago Raid once before in 2003 but had to withdraw early in the race after an unfortunate leg injury. After sailing around the world solo non stop in monohull and multihull, (Vendee Globe, Solo Round the World and Jules Verne records) McArthur stopped sailing for two years. Now she is back with a new project and has chosen the challenging Archipelago Raid as a part of her comeback. She will team up with Greg Homann from Australia. Official website more »

Shosholoza refutes media claim that team has "gone bust"
Posted 3 months, 19 days ago by Valencia Sailing
[Source: Team Shosholoza] Team Shosholoza has issued a statement categorically denying reports in the international media at the weekend that the team has “gone bust.”
Team managing director Captain Salvatore Sarno said that on the contrary a busy schedule was planned for 2008 and the structure of the team hadn’t changed since July last year.
“Our helmsman Paolo Cian will continue to lead Shosholoza in the 10 events of the 2008 World Match Racing Tour. In fact Paolo is third on the ISAF match race rankings and was runner-up at last week’s tour qualifier, the Marseille International Match Race in France. It was the first big event for Shosholoza this year.
“Shosholoza RSA 83 and her crew is also scheduled to compete in two Italian regattas this year. In June we will be at the popular annual Velalonga in Naples, a traditional sailing regatta open to all classes of boats. In October we will be at Trieste’s spectacular Barcolana, which with over 2000 competing yachts is the largest sailing race in Europe..
“We also plan to compete in a series of America’s Cup Grand Prix events, if and when they take place," said Captain Sarno.
“In South Africa our naval architect Alex Simonis and his team is working on our new AC 90 campaign yacht. We are going ahead even though the rules and dimensions might change. But we want to be ready and prepared.
“In Valencia, Spain, we continue to operate from our base in Port America’s Cup with the same skeleton staff we've had since July last year when Shosholoza was accepted as a challenger for the next, 33rd , America’s Cup," said Sarno.
He said MSC Crociere was still on board as chief sponsor of Team Shosholoza. Breil of Milan, a new sponsor announced in November last year, is currently structuring their new marketing campaign around Team Shosholoza.
Captain Sarno was responding to an article by Greg Ford first published in New Zealand’s Sunday Star Times at the weekend (16 March) that claimed : “South African and German syndicates that sailed in the last Cup and had entered the 33rd edition, on the provision it went ahead in 2009, went bust during the week. Although court action was pending they could not hold on any longer and there is strong suspicion Britain's highly-touted team, bankrolled by Sir Keith Mills, will be the next to fold.”
Ford’s article explored the ramifications of the dispute between America’s Cup defenders the Swiss Team Alinghi and the American team BMW Oracle Racing currently being decided by the New York Supreme Court.
It also discussed the subsequent writ issued by Team New Zealand against Alinghi for breaking an agreement that the next America’s Cup would be held in 2009.
“I can’t speak for the other syndicates but nothing has changed for us," said Sarno. "We can only call for a full re-grouping of the team once we know the outcome of the court case and once we have fixed dates for the next America’s Cup."
“The disarray in the America’s Cup is regrettable but it gives us more time to secure our position, especially since we are still actively seeking a South African title sponsor.” more »

"D-48 hours" to the Space Shuttle lift off...
Posted 5 months, 14 days ago by Rule 69 Blog
Good old Franck Cammas - never one to shy away from adding a bit of drama to proceedings. Apparently the Groupama boys are now on "Code Jaune" with "D-48 hours" to lift off...oh purrrrllleeeeassse! It's a sailing race, not the freakin' Space Shuttle! There's an old phrase in boxing that says if you talk the talk, you gotta walk the walk... Anyhow, sounds like they've assembled a good team of hairy, smelly offshore monkeys to get this beast around the world and I wish them luck if they do get away. However who wants to take a bet with me that they don't beat Joyon's single-handed record let alone Peyron's time? I reckon they'll get to Australia if they're lucky before Groupama falls to pieces... (And for the record I'm on Code Purple, covered in honey and feathers with the RORC committee whipping me....)
