DAY 3 - RACE 3 Battle of the Gold Stars
Conditions: 7-15knt Sea BreezePlacings: Top Mark 3rd, Bottom Mark 3rd, Top Mark (2) 2nd, Bottom Mark (2) 3rd, FINISH 3RDIt was a Battle of the Gold Stars today with Us, Rohart (FRA) and Scheidt (BRA) fighting it out the whole way around for the win. These guys finished on the Podium with us at 2006 Worlds, 2006 North Americans, 2007 Pre Olympics so it was familiar battle grounds again today. After Pepsi launched us off the line with a great Start just down from the Committee Boat we were able to get straight into phase with the shifts and had clear lanes for the whole race (which makes it so much easier!!!). Today the right was very powerful and a lot of guys who had been plugging the left all week were made to pay including double race winner Mateusz Kusznierewicz (POL). The second upwind leg saw the wind pick up over 10knts and shift further right, Rohart did a great job of getting just enough outside us on the right to get past and then did a great job defending his lead to the top mark, the second down wind saw some very aggressive sailing from the three of us, extending on the fleet behind. Unfortunately coming in on a strong shift Scheidt (BRA) got across us approaching the gate. The final upwind leg to the finish was fairly one way, providing the least amount of passing lanes for the day. Rohart sailed well to defend both of us and we finished placed as we had rounded the leeward mark. To top the very long day off we were picked out for a random Body Weight check, so it was no food or water on the way in just to make sure we wernt on the heavy side, all clear 2.5kg's under.Again it was great to see the 8187 going so strong against all the other Olympic hopefuls, another tick in the box for boat speed! Now we need to focus a little harder on clearing the rust out in the Boat handling department, but if that's our biggest problem then at this stage we should be pretty happy.Reserve day tomorrow and back out there on Tuesday for the 4th of 6 races. Also, special thanks to Fried Elliott. All the awesome photography you see from this event is shot by him. PLease check out his webisite Fried Elliott Full Story »
