Coral Reef Cup Day two
The second day of the Coral Reef cup started like the first with a one hour postponement. We left the dock early since we wanted to start tuning up as soon as the breeze filled in. The breeze filled in shortly and we began tuning up. The race committee could not start a race for at least an hour since they had to wait out the postponement period. We tuned up for an hour trying to tune our new mast for he predicted light conditions. The first race started around twelve o’clock. There was a big shift to the right about 8 minutes after the start that separated the fleet. Anyone who went left quickly locked into the back half of the fleet. We were on the left and decided to cut our losses early. We started taking transoms and worked out way out the right. Knowing when to cut your losses is always a hard decision but continuing over to the wrong side of the fleet only pushes you back further in the standings. Once we rounded the top mark our goal was to make up as much distance on the top 10 as possible and hope for an opportunity. The opportunity fell into our lap at the leeward gate. A boat hoping for a late opening at the gate timed it all wrong. 6-8 boats piled up and slid downwind as a group. This allowed us to turn inside the group and head off to the right had side. Once free of the pack we were able to close the gap further and pass a few boats ending up fifth. The breeze increased right at the finish of the race. After finishing fifth in the first race were getting a little behind in the scores. With the breeze up we changed our jib and adjusted the rig set up. Our adjustments worked well and we were able to win the final two races. Full Story »
