Team New Zealand taking Alinghi/SNG to court....?
I've got to be slightly careful here before I get my arse sued but there's growing word on the street that Team New Zealand have hired some major league lawyers and are about to issue proceedings in New York against Alinghi and the Societe Nautique de Geneve. Allegedly the claim could be up to 25 million dollars (not sure if that's kiwi dollars or US big ones) and I understand that it's a double lawsuit with one element being the failure of Alinghi/SNG in the fiduciary duty as holders of the trophy and asking them to be stripped as administrators of the Cup... This is all pretty heavyweight stuff and my only thought is that if this is true, bearing in mind the delicate financial position of TNZ, they must have taken some serious heavyweight counsel and must be absolutely sure that they have a cast iron case. They simply can't afford a frivolous and very costly case in the New York courts on a whim... Apparently Grant Dalton is in New York right now and there's an announcement expected at 7.00pm UK time. On the other hand, it could all be another "Hula" moment now that I've broken this story, and I'll be left with egg on my face and a lawsuit from the Kiwis...let's see!
