Nice to see Iain Percy on top at the glamorously-named Bacardi Cup but I'm just not buying their press releases which complain bitterly about their upwind speed. Their latest one mentioned their upwind blues twice: "Overall we are leading which is great but in reality the new boat is not going well. It is very fast downwind but upwind it is sadly nowhere near where it should be" and "We again had the same issues with a distinct lack of speed upwind and bags of speed with the wind behind us." Now, I'm a cynical git that rarely believes anything that i'm told so this press release and the one yesterday just raised my journalist heckles...what's going on here? What's the real story and who is Percy trying to nudge? Perhaps they're having a go at their designer Juan K? Maybe it's a dig at the coaches (surely not the sublime Sid?) or it could be North Sails that are being pushed for a better deal...? Who knows.... Then again, maybe their upwind speed really is rubbish...even though they're winning from an absolutely class field. To my devious mind it doesn't add up...Is there some sandbagging and mind games going on in the Star class?? Wouldn't be the first time now, would it... Full Story »
