I have to say that I really do admire Andy Rice and his quite excellent Sailjuice website/blogsite and his coverage of the current ISAF & RYA spat has been truly first class. It's nice to see that someone has the intellect to cover what is possibly the most incestuous, political, committee-led wrangle of all time with some sharp politico ex-sailors lobbying at the highest level. From the outside it looks like an absolute joke as the lead players are all lobbying for jurassic classes that are little reflective of the modern sailing world. I'm in favour of scrapping every Olympic class and having a thorough re-think of what our sport is actually showcasing in the Olympics. I was in Athens for the last Games and it was so monumentally boring to watch that I high-tailed off to the Olympic Stadium and watched some track and field instead of going out on the water every day - it was just dull, dull, dull and the sooner ISAF wakes up to that fact, the sooner the sport will progress. Now, we know that the IOC desperately wants to cut down on the number of sailors so why don't we do just that. Cut out the Finnasaurus, Star, Ynglingasaurus, 470 and all the rest and just go with a Laser for both men and women, the Moth for men and women and the 49er for men and women. That's just 120 sailors, no need for lavish facilities, just get out there and go for gold. Simple really. The longer we pursue the ridiculous classes the swifter our sports' complete exit from the Games and then where does that leave ISAF? Dead and buried and a footnote in history...
