Still Relevant?
As an ex-420 sailor it rather pains me when I look at the class these days and wonder whether there's a very finite time for the design to stay relevant? I have to say that I absolutely loved sailing them and had a whale of a time in the Youth Squad back in the late 80's but that was then and this is now. Sure, they're a great feeder for the 470 Olympic class but that Jurassic beast is squarely living on borrowed time and it makes me think that the 420 is so inextricably attached to the fate of its grown-up cousin. If the 470 goes, then national authorities will be pulling the trap door on the 420 in minutes. Shame, because it's a great starter boat but the Playstation generation want bigger thrills and I can only conclude that the skiffs will be the big winners. What do you think?
