Is the Laser Worlds as prestigious as ever?
Far be it for me to lose friends and alienate people but I'm just not buying the Laser Worlds at the moment. It all seems a bit complicated and has the paw prints of an ISAF Committee all over it with Gold fleets, Silver fleets, Bronze fleets Yellow Groups and Blue groups etc etc....I'm totally lost. What happened to the Laser being the boat for the "turn up and play" generation? Okay, so the fleets got a bit big, well great, why not have 200 or 300 boats on massive lines, huge courses and first past the post wins. By splitting the fleet, it just creates confusion for the spectators and the media and thereby the overall message is lost. This is atypical of a committee decision and busy bodies trying to do the sport a favour but totally losing the plot. I remember reading the Laser Magazine way back when I was in the Youth Squad and it was right at the time when Lawrence Crispin won a really windy Worlds and there was this terrific picture of him surfing down the front cover, all 16 stones of sailing talent with weight bottles on...Right then I thought that was the coolest fleet on planet earth. Now I look at the Laser and go: "why bother?" Anyone else feel the same...email me: magnus@rule69blog.com Full Story »
