Explain this to me...
One of the Olympic arguments that I keep on hearing and that no-one seems to ever challenge is that we, as a sport, have to cater for heavier (read: fat boys) and hence the Finnasaurus gets an automatic spot and huge backing. But my question is: "why?" And then I look at the women's Laser singlehander where they get to sail with the Radial rig but there's no option for ladies who are bigger? Is this sending, therefore, the message that the IOC and ISAF don't want larger women to compete and that we want identikit athletic blondes like Anna Tunnicliffe (above)? Surely in the interests of fairness there should be a Laser Radial AND a Laser full-rig option if the boys have got the Laser and the Finnasaurus? Basically the argument that we should have fat boys wandering around the Olympic village sailing Finns and Stars is on desperately shaky ground. Isn't it just the most obvious thing to drop the Finnasaurus as soon as possible? Obviously the answer is "yes" but it will have to go through the myriad backward committees of ISAF where there's absolutely no chance of any progress being made and change will only happen when the IOC turns around to ISAF and barks the order that sailing has to be cut drastically...And then the ISAF president will claim that it was his idea all along to radically change the sport and embrace the new... Remember you heard it here first.... Photo: Rolex/Dan Nerney Full Story »
