Christmas in the wildest ocean on earth.
onEdition Christmas in the wildest ocean on earth, 12,000 miles from home and their families, the Barcelona World Race sailors will be alone in the Southern Ocean. The five two person teams competing in the Barcelona World Race (non stop race around the world) have faced hurricane force winds, icy seas and mountainous waves and survived on freeze dried rations and limited sleep on their IMOCA OPEN 60 yachts. On board there are no bathroom facilities and a single ring stove used to heat freeze dried food. The sailors will spend Christmas day alone at sea,12,000 miles away from their families. They are expecting a rough, cold and isolated Christmas. Whilst much of the world will be celebrating Christmas the teams will be pushing their 60 foot yachts hard in this brutal 28000 mile race around the world, which for the leaders is approaching the half way stage. Current race leaders PAPREC VIRBAC 2 with French skipper JEAN-PIERRE DICK and Irish co-skipper DAMIAN FOXALL have led the fleet since the 7th of december and they are now within 3 days of reaching the Cook Straits off New Zealand which marks the half way point of the race as they pass through mandatory race gate 5. Within just 100 miles of the leader is HUGO BOSS with British sailor ALEX THOMSON at the helm and Australian co-skipper ANDREW CAPE will be pushing for first place having moved from 8th to 2nd position since crossing into the Southern hemisphere and setting the World 24 hour distance record on the 7th December at over 500 miles. Merry Christmas to all our readers! The Alex Thomson Racing team. Full Story »
