The low black schooner America.On 8 July 1857, George Schuyler, representing the former owners of the yacht America, delivered the "100 Guinea Cup" (at least that's how it had been engraved) to the New York Yacht Club with a two-page handwritten letter deeding the Cup -- by then popularly called "America's Cup" in honor of the yacht that had won it -- to NYYC as Trustee "upon the conditions that it shall be preserved as a perpetual Challenge Cup for friendly competition between foreign countries." The letter also set out the terms for the international inter-club competition which now has been held 32 times, starting with the challenge of the Royal Thames YC (GBR) in 1870. Therefore, 150 years ago today could be considered the true beginning of the America?s Cup -- now widely regarded the oldest trophy in international sports.
