TVNZ: All Quiet in Valencia
Jul 8, 2007 By John McBeth (NZL, TVNZ Sports) The Port America's Cup in Valencia is now quiet and devoid of the throngs of people who made it such an invigorating environment as recently as two days ago. The 32nd America's Cup is now over. People are still talking about it, but mainly those who were not directly involved have turned their attention to other things in life. The day following Alinghi's dramatic win in Race Seven, the hundreds who had helped televise this event, began dismantling the International Broadcast Centre. I arrived at 10 am to find control rooms in various stages of de-rig, offices being cleared out, trucks driving away with equipment which had seemingly been permanently installed. On Sunday, only the shell of the IBC remained. As the small ONE Sport crew closed the door on the container, which will take technical equipment back to Auckland, we all took photos of what had been our work place for nearly four months. There were people from all over Europe to say goodbye to - other broadcasters from France, Italy, Spain, England and elsewhere-people who had become very good friends and part of a very large family. As we made our farewells, there was there unanimous desire to meet again here in Valencia in 2009 for the 33rd America's Cup, but there is this lingering doubt. Full story Full Story »
