Alinghi hangs in for four
It was an emotional rollercoaster ride for the Kiwis today as they started in the lead and looked likely to win when the wind changed their fortunes. It was especially hurtfull after yesterdays shot in the foot. After a good start, and escaping a debated pre-start penalty call, the Kiwis led Alinghi out to the left where they found a shift which would make Alinghi fall in behind to the point they would need to tack. Leading around the windward mark, they held the lead even through the leeward gate. By choosing the buoy furtherest, left, away from the favored right side, they gave Alinghi some catch up ground. This was enough for Alinghi to engage NZ in a tacking duel which NZ was forced to leebow which was fine for the first two encounters, on the third, they ran into a header and were completely off the wind, struggling for speed. It was all that Alinghi needed. Alinghi rounded the next windward mark ahead, covered downwind at first but then split two times finishing in the middle of the course.
