Q&A -- Why No 18th Crew?
Q: Why is neither Alinghi nor ETNZ carrying an 18th VIP guest crew? Has the rule that allows teams to carry an 18th crew been changed for the AC Match? A: No, the AC Class Rule still permits it. However, neither team wants the distraction (Alinghi has never sailed with an 18th crew). Moreover, one suspects that both teams have designed their boats to benefit, if even marginally, from carrying the (unmoveable) 100kg corrector weights that, under the ACC rule, must be carried in lieu of an 18th crew.
