New Boat Numbers
I was having an email conversation to Adam May today about making sure that all new boats, whether built in the UK or imported from outside, are immediately registered in the UK so that a national number can be allocated to that boat. The second hand boat market works off the sail number of the boat. People expect to find the latest number Moth to be the newest boat. Unfortunately this isn't necessarily true. Its not fair that someone can sail their boat at their club and avoid registering it until a significantly later date, upon which they receive a new number. Probably trying to be sneaky with the second hand price of the boat! Not sure what the answer is... but we definately need to adopt a stronger approach. Perhaps peer pressure is enough! It would certainly be embarrassing if someone turned up with an old design mistress with a new number! The problem isn't with the people who regularly race on the Open meeting circuit, as they tend to get noticed if they haven't got a number (the boat isn't measured for starters!) Instead its the people who sail Moths but perhaps not yet at a open meeting level. Obviously we would like as many people as possible to race at opens, as you definately learn more there!Maybe the builders should have the power to give the boat a number? which is automatically given before the boat is sold?Certainly needs some thought, especially as production enters warp speed! Anyone with any boat that isn't numbered up should contact Adam asap. It doesn't need measuring until planned to be raced... but does need a number allocated!Anyway enough ranting. Next thing you know I'll be running for the committee! Full Story »
