Match 1 Preview: Not Your Daddy's Dockout
Email from ACM to the teams this morning.... On Saturday to mark the first day of the AC Match, pyrotechnical effects, 2 air patrols and live music will be emphasizing the departure from their bases of ETNZ & Alinghi. A short mascletá* at 12h30, 12h35 and 12h45 will mark a countdown to the exit of the teams. Just before 13h, the first team to go is ETNZ, with sound effects placed close to their base to announce their dockout, followed a few minutes later by Alinghi, with sound effects also. Both teams as they go through the canal will pass in front a live band and the Cup. Meanwhile, along the canal, volunteers will distribute applauding devices with the colours of the 2 teams to the visitors and the fans. Above, the spanish and swiss air patrols will also take part to the show until 13h40. *Ed.'s note: pronounced mahs-clay-TAH, mascletá means a daytime fireworks show that is more noise than light. and we are talking LOUD, sustained noise, not some puny, sporadic firecrackers. The fireworks really begin tomorrow at 14:55 (2:55pm CET, 8:55am ET in the USA), the scheduled time for the preparatory (five-minute) signal for Match 1, of the 32nd Defense of the America's Cup -- the oldest trophy in international sport.
