Midweek Musings
Your Ed. is migrating to a new computer, so posting here on the BOB may be a bit sporadic for the next day or so as we get the new machine together -- a widescreen HP Pavilion dv6000 media center computer. Migrating to a new machine is never easy, but the windows migration wizard makes it tolerable and certainly easier than it was under older operating systems. So far so good. Hard to believe how much one takes for granted a good, working computer until it goes on the fritz or is time to change to a new one. Only then do you realize just how many settings, savings and customizations you have made with the old laptop that seemingly cannot be lived without. Also hard to believe that tomorrow is the two-year anniversary of the BOB. We will do something appropriate to mark the occasion, like maybe ignore it! Seriously, we will reflect a bit on the past two years of blogging for the team, and future plans for the BOB. This week summer has indeed arrived in VLC, just when the locals always say it will. "Hasta el cuarenta de mayo no te quites el sayo", which means, roughly, "untl the 40th of May, don't take off your jacket." The 40th of May, of course, is the 10th of June. And sure enough, this week it has been in the 30s (high 80s F) each afternoon. And until this week it never hurt to have at least a sweater close at hand if not a jacket, especially in the evening. the kids are out of school end of next week, and then it really gets hot, until about the time they start up again in mid-September. Speaking of school end/start, the current chat among many of the AC families is "who's staying, and who's going and where/when. Some families are already outta here, others (even those from eliminated teams) are hanging out to see what's next and where. Some kids are just wrapping up school only to move back to the southern hemisphere and almost immediately start up the second half of the school year in same grade, or the next grade. Choices and decisions -- never easy. Finally, some of you will have noticed that, once again, we have had to turn off the comments facility here on the BOB. This because we are getting spammed to death by spam 'bots -- automated "robots" that post spam into the comments section, somehow breaking through the various security measures. The spam is not offensive per se, just links to email addresses and strange or non-existent websites that can cause problems for the servers that host our blog. The wizards in Germany and Austria where the blog is hosted are working on solutions, or so they tell me. Until then, sorry, though we may try to turn it back on during the AC Match beginning the 23rd June. Full Story »
