Luna Rossa gets pounded
Most people don't realize how lucky they were see the third race take place because the wind was much lighter and there was talk of the no wind. Luck was not in the Italians camp for the third day in a row as Team New Zealand thrashed them again but this time by a huge margin. Luna Rossa came in from the right side and met New Zealand for what seemed like an never ending dialup. At least two and a half minutes later, Luna Rossa peeled off for the right hand side with New Zealand following. Luna was actually in control and would have been able to push New Zealand even further but as it was they hit the line with speed on the middle of the line. Apparently there was an eight degree bias on the left and they wanted the left. New Zealand got a slow start, four seconds behind, but was well planted on the committee end. Despite their jump start, NZ was closest to some fresh breeze coming from the right and sailed in a good lift gaining back what they lost and then some.Liking what they saw, they headed to the right and extended the spread rounding the weather mark first. Not content with getting slapped for going on the left, Luna Rossa jibe set at the mark to go left again.New Zealand followed with a loose cover and increased their lead finishing 1:30 ahead of Luna R.The Italian implosion is leaving many disallusioned as most expected to go past five races. Layday tomorrow to lick their wounds and recharge. Some how Spithill needs to be able to get at Barker and all the while, what is running through the minds of everyone over at the Alinghi camp.On another note, the Formula One circuit seems to be becoming a reality with a picture of the owner of F1 signing with Valencia politicians in England. The planned track goes in front of Alinghi's base. If Alinghi wins, would they be interested in a F1 team themselves? Why not? They are a sports team. If you have already won the America's Cup and defended it, what's left? Now having the America's Cup and a formula one title would be good in your trophy room wouldn't it? Full Story »
