Third Race semis
With slightly overcast skies, the third race started in a 10-12 breeze.NZ DesafioKiwis cop penalty for gybing too close onto starboard during the prestart. First a port tack and the New Zealanders were leading but then the Spanish started sailing higher on the stb tack and pulled out to a 30m lead. After rounding first, the Kiwis stayed on their air forcing the Spanish to jibe away. They jibed back to cover and then planted themselves just in front of NZ. The spanish take the right mark and side of the course while the Kiwis take left. They won't find anything on the left and there is over a 300 meter advantage to the Spanish. This will be the first time they have ever beaten the Kiwis. The Spanish win by over one minute. Score card 2-1 in favor of the Kiwis.Oracle Luna RossaOracle got chased to the right hand side of the box and tried to escape by heading up but then got pushed up to the line with 14 seconds to go. Luna went for a port tack start with plenty of speed. Oracle had to really dive down to start at the pin but pretty dead in the water. Luna Rossa 20m lead in a speed test. As all the other races in this series, Luna Rossa leads at the windward mark. There is a gybing duel on the downwind leg but Luna Rounds the right mark first and takes the right side. Oracle takes the left buoy and side of the course but actually lose a little bit. Oracle once again proved their down wind speed by making up 14 seconds on the last leg but still finish 30 seconds behind Full Story »
