Six and seventh races of Act 13
Race six was marked by a well fought win by Desafio Esp after fighting off Alinghi throughout the course and especially in the final run into the finish line. A make or break jibe was executed well enough by the Spanish to defend their single boat length lead over the Swiss. Unfortunately all too often, the giddiness of a spectacular win destroys the discipline necessary to continue a teams’ winning ways. Such was the case when they fouled two boats in the next race, number 7, which was more embarrassing than anything else for it's nonsensical tactics. They tried to barge their way into a very tight starboard layline into the windward mark by tacking too close to leeward of Luna Rossa who wasn’t faking it when they had to dodge out of the way. If that wasn’t enough, they came cruising down on port, without a spinnaker onto Areva, almost T-boned them and jibed extremely close onto starboard. Flags came out and the Spanish did penalty circles again. Once again, it was a perfect example of how the winning teams are the ones which are consistent and build on that consistency. Full Story »
