DURBAN finishes 3rd in the first leg of the Round The World Sailing Clipper Race.
CLOSE FINISH FOR DURBAN IN ROUND THE WORLD SAILING CLIPPER YACHT RACE - Sunday 25th September 05: The first race of the Sailing Clipper 05-06 Round the World Yacht Race was a close battle to the end with Liverpool 08 taking first place at 0614 hours (local time), westernaustralia.com in second place at 0642 hours and the Durban Clipper storming in to take third position at 0654 hours - just 12 minutes behind the Aussies. The Durban Clipper entered the Port of Cascais, Portugal under a beautiful sunrise with a gentle 5-10 knots of breeze. No time was wasted to crack open the champagne and congratulate fellow crew members on their success. Skippered by Craig Millar, the home grown Durban sailor said: "This is a fantastic result for Durban, we grafted hard to get this position and it paid off. The crew deserve a well earned beer tonight then we focus on the challenge ahead - the Atlantic crossing to Brazil." After an emotional farewell from Liverpool, UK, last Sunday, the amateur crew of Durban have endured treacherous conditions in the Irish Sea heading towards the Bay of Biscay. Members of the crew come from all walks of life to compete in this adventure of a lifetime. Amongst them is a doctor, manager of a cycle shop, attorney and architect. Race Director of Clipper Ventures Plc, Tim Hedges said: "This first race has been tougher for the crews than they may have been expecting - they have had to deal with both physical and mental challenges due to the extreme changes in weather." The next race starts at 1400 hours on Wednesday 28th September where the crew of this 10 yacht race will take on the formidable challenge of the Atlantic. The yachts will visit 12 international ports - including Durban (South Africa), Freemantle (Western Australia), Qingdao (China), Victoria (Canada) and New York (US) - before the race reaches a thrilling climax in Liverpool in July 2006.
