Good-bye Alicante, bound for Cape Town
After about 50 laps around the port... We all hunkered down and left the safe haven of port. Telefonica Blue was first to bite the bullet and caught a glace of them as they took the turn into open Med where they were quickly engulfed by white water and launched out the back end of the wave which gave a less then pleasant welcome. A baptism of sorts... Every boat leaving port had the welcome of 2m waves, breaking waves made picture taking a challenge and wind gusts kept one with a hand on the rail at all times. We made a point to do a head count in our rib...we dropped off a few waves but all in play with the event's tag line: Life at the Extreme Mark's blog commentary replays the event best, but it was clear Telefonica Blue had a stellar start to have Ericsson 4 show their speed with first to weather mark while Puma played a conservative start in my opinion but came up second at Windward and Telefonica Blue third. We are all still dripping wet from the ride and not so patiently awaiting first position reports to see what the line up is thus far...and so goes the life of all those involved with VOR...no sleep for the next three weeks.
