Cruising with Osprey: Dismal Swamp - continued
It really was an amazing experience slowly motoring down the canal today. As you can see from the photo, it is quite narrow and at times it seemed as though the overhanging trees and branches would catch in the rigging. It does seem that the Army Corps of Engineers do a great job to prevent this from happening by clipping off encroaching branches. The water is a dark coffee colour due to tanins from the Cypress growing on the banks. We saw lots of turtles sunning themselves on tree stumps and I spotted one water snake swimming along, apparently these are fairly common but I don't know what kind of snake they are exactly. One thing that struck us is the wonderful smells we are treated to as we meander along. The air was very warm and still today and every so often we would get a blast of Cedar / Cypress scented air - intoxicating. Full Story »
