www.Sail-Search.com: Gavin Fordham, NSRI Richards Bay Deputy Station Commander said: “We were alerted at 07h21 following reports of the Vasco Da Gama yacht race yacht Zeus reporting to be rudderless after sustaining damage to her rudder and requiring assistance 94 nautical miles North of Richards Bay and 30 nautical miles off-shore. “The 8 crew on-board reported to be in no imminent danger but requiring assistance. “Our NSRI rescue craft Spirit of Richards Bay was launched and rendezvoused with Zeus at approximately 15h30. A tow-line has been rigged, all crew are safe and Spirit of Richards Bay have Zeus under tow and expect to arrive in Richards Bay Port between 08h00 and 09h00 tomorrow. “Sea swells are an average 3 metres and NSRI volunteers at our rescue base are monitoring the tow operations progress assisted by Maritime Radio Services. “At 11h10 the Vasco Da Gama yacht race yacht Nina, with 8 crew on-board, reported to have suffered a ripped mast, 80 nautical miles North of Richards Bay, and unable to sail further. They reported to be under her motor power and motoring towards Richards Bay. We are monitoring her progress. “Spirit of Richards Bay went past Nina while still en-route to rendezvous with Zeus and confirmed that Nina’s crew were in no imminent danger motoring well towards Richards Bay Port. “At present (22h00 – 01/08/2008) Nina are approximately 30 nautical miles from Richards Bay and due in at Port at around 06h00 to 07h00 tomorrow morning while Spirit of Richards Bay, towing Zeus, are approximately 40 nautical miles from Port and making good headway. “The Vasco Da Gama yacht race is being sailed from Maputo to Durban.” Related Link: Da Gama Race Positions Full Story »
