Live Sailing Broadcast
http://www.abyc.org.za/lipton2008/ www.Sail-Search.com: Sailing as a sport needs to be brought to the average sport fan and, preferably, delivered in an entertaining and interactive way so that questions can be answered for all to learn and understand. By the very nature of sailing the broadcast times needed can vary from short 45 minute races to covering of events taking months to complete. This time factor has a direct impact on the broadening of the fan base via the use of video and the internet, as in certain countries broadband is very slow and costs a large amount of money in terms of bandwidth. In my mind the ideal solution is to be able to log on to a site, experience text real time reporting which also offers real time uploaded video and photographs which the user can elect to view or not, as well as a facility to comment on the regatta, vote in polls, as well as ask questions of the reporter. Cricinfo have the real time text reporting of Cricket matches down to an art. Various sailing sites show video or live GPS plotting of the boats on the course. I have come across a live broadcast utilising text, live reader feedback and questions, image and maybe video that is planned for August 2008 in Cape Town, South Africa. One of the local yacht clubs is promising to cover the 100th Lipton Cup Challenge live from the water. The brief sample test broadcast looks like it could do the job.
