Riding High
Long Hot days are on the Menu for this Olympic Games. 5-6 Hours in the heat can really takes it toll over a week of racing. So part of our physical preparation includes some long hot endurance rides. All the Cycling l have been doing in preparation for the Olympics has been carefully planed and prescribed through Damian Marsh (TrainWell) who is also heavily involved with the NZ Track Pursuit Team. It has been a combination of strength/ power work and endurance all along being implemented with David Slyfields (NZ) conditioning program. The pics above are of Tom Ashley (NZ RS:X Olympic Rep) and Myself at the top of "Eslida" the second of four climbs through our 150km ride. Eslida took us to 800m Altitude the previous climb Oronet was 500m and there was still two more climbs to come at 950m and 777m respectively. Hence the fact we are still smiling in the photo..... and No l have nothing to show you what we looked liked upon our return 6 hours later! haha!Tom has been here in Valencia using the similar light conditions to train and prepare for Qingdao. Tom being a fellow Cycling nut we have been able to get out for some great training rides together. David (Abo) Abercrombie BOR Physio/ Head of Training department has known Tom for quite a while and therefor Tom has been in at the BOR gym completing David Slyfields (Star team trainer also) training programs as well. Valencia has proved to be a great place for all types of the build up, with China like Sailing conditions, great facilities thanks to the Americas Cup and local Yacht Clubs and being in Europe, central to a lot of the competition. The physical element has been a real strong point leading up to these Olympics and something l hope to report on more in the future, because with out a shadow of a doubt l am in the best physical condition l have ever been in. Leaving time and effort to concentrate on Sailing to full potential. Full Story »
