Christiania: Clipper!
Well well well, its a funny old world. The day after we arrived in Panama, I received an email from a friend called cookie - I trained him in Portugal to take part in the 2002 Clipper race, then yesterday morning a blog message from Kathy (who took part in the 2000 Clipper race with me) saying the 2008 fleet are transiting the canal, and sure enough when I looked up from my computer across the marina a few of the Clipper boats were there!!! (see photo above) For those of you who don't know, I sailed in the 2000 race as crew, then after the race joined the company as 1st mate, helping to train the crews for the 2002 race, and worked up to being reserve skipper for that race - I got the call to take over as skipper in 2002 but for various reasons turned it down (which I still regret really). So have quite a lot of history with the company. It was great to and meet the crews yesterday, and nothing really has changed - 5 minutes after Durban Clipper tied up last night all the crew were downing beer in the bar!!! Unfortunately as it's a quick stopover non of the shore side team (Colin de M, RKJ etc) are here but I hope to get a message to them via one of the boats. Well what other news is there? Not alot really, Neil & Emma are off backpacking tomorrow as nearly all the jobs list are done, we still need 2 crew for the pacific, and it's been raining for the last 10 hours. I best go now and get some breakfast before all these damn Clipper crews eat it all!!! Full Story »
